How to make visible a leading life sciences district nested in the vibrant Eastlake neighborhood?

At Studio Matthews we are working with Alexandria Real Estate to weave their presence in the district, making aware the passers by — pedestrians stopping by the bakery, runners and bikers on the Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop, drivers – of the science that is happening behind some of the buildings.

A map invites to explore the district, highlighting parks, shoreline trails, popular destinations at walking distance, and other amenities.

New murals celebrate themes of science and nature. One illustrates medicinal compounds derived from plants native to the Pacific Northwest. Another transforms natural forms—bacteria, ferns, phytoplankton, an insect’s wing, slime mold—into striking compositions at monumental scale.

With a subtle signage system in the Alexandria navy blue, we brought cohesion to the diverse collection of their buildings. Friendly condensed numbers integrated in the landscape help identify the district locations.
